"We Had a
Great time!":
This may not be the expected reaction to picking up garbage, but third
district Councilman Scott McKechnie was both
sincere and enthusiastic. May 17th was a beautiful, sunny
Saturday morning, as district #3 got their
chance to participate in the city-wide clean-up efforts. Scott was thrilled
with the opportunity to provide hands-on service to his constituents.
“People were glad to see us collecting, and glad the city is willing to do
this,” Scott stated. “We look forward to doing it again in the fall.”
City workers Mike Pierce, Greg Aaron and Ed White were assisted by several
DOC volunteers. They covered the district in just less than two hours and
had two trucks nearly full, with the majority of the refuse from the
Highview / Lakeview Subdivisions.
Despite notices in The Leader and on the city website, and the
distribution of leaflets throughout the district, numerous people were
unaware of the opportunity to dispose of large items and yard waste. Scott
hopes to reach more people the next time. He concluded, “We couldn’t have
asked for a better day."

Charlestown Clean-up Continues:
As the early morning fog lifted on Saturday, May 10th, city
employees Marvin Haycraft and Greg Aaron were found driving their assigned
garbage trucks through district #4 as part
of the Block Watch efforts to help clean-up the city. A van filled with
DOC volunteers was driven by City Services Director Lee Slaughter. It took
four hours to collect all the garbage throughout the district.
Councilman Dan Roberts rode along and
assisted with the manual labor as well as speaking with residents and
ensuring they were satisfied with the completed tasks. Afterward, Dan
stated, “It was a huge success, as the two trucks were filled to near
capacity since so many residents took advantage of the opportunity. I
actually enjoyed it, and look forward to doing it again in the fall,” Dan
added. “It felt good to give back to the community."

2nd
District Clean-up Day Successful:
Saturday morning, April 26th,
found city employees Marvin Haycraft, Lee Slaughter and several DOC
volunteers riding the streets of District 2, collecting excess yard waste
and debris, as scheduled by the Block Watch committee. Councilman Terry
Pierce said he spoke with Haycraft upon completion of the project and was
pleased to hear everything went well. He also stated that he would like the
city to offer this service to the residents twice a year, as it looks so
much better when it is cleaned up.
Block Watch coordinator,
George Roberts, reported there was wide-spread participation, in response to
their members’ efforts to get word of the event to District 2 residents.
This was evidenced by the mounds of tree branches and junk at curbsides late
in the week. George had out-of-town duties for two days, but was happy to
see everything was nicely cleared away when he returned Saturday afternoon.
George
expressed his gratitude to the city employees and volunteers who ensured the
project was completed as planned.
