Building Commissioner

The Office of Planning and Zoning is responsible for administration and enforcement of all provisions of the city’s zoning ordinance. All permits for excavation, construction, moving or alteration, or changes in type of occupancy must be reviewed and approved by this office before construction, alterations, relocation or change of use. Review and processing of all permit applications for all building structures, including fences and swimming pools, are initiated through the Office of Planning and Zoning.

A former three-term Charlestown city councilman, City of Charlestown Building Commissioner Tony Jackson served as building commissioner from 2000 to 2004, and resumed his duties as building commissioner in 2008. Jackson is a 15-year veteran of the U.S. Navy and a Charlestown native. As building commissioner, Jackson is responsible for administering the city’s planning and zoning laws, along with building inspection, code enforcement, safety and flood administration.
