New to the list this month is the Charlestown Walking Club which meets Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 7:30 p.m. They meet behind the Park Street Church of Christ. You may walk as much or as little as you wish and your leashed dog is welcome, too.

Movies in the Park again this Friday, July 9. This week’s movie is Shorts. Parks Concessions open at 7:00 with chili dogs, nachos and popcorn. Dance with the Concession Stand Crew at 9:00 p.m.. Movie Showtime is 9:30!!

2010 Charlestown Founders Day Talent Show and Parade

The 2010 Founders Day celebration is this weekend, Friday and Saturday, June 25th and 26th. Founders Day is our annual festival during which there are a variety of exciting and fun events. This year we are going to stream the Talent Show and Parade live over the internet. The Talent Show starts at 6:00 p.m. Friday evening at the Gazebo in Greenway Park. The Parade proceeds down Market Street beginning at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Click the links below to watch live. The archive recordings will be available for at least a year by using the same link.

The 2010 Founders Day Prince & Princess Pageant was held Saturday, June 12th, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the Donna Coomer Room of the Charlestown A & E Center. Congratulations to Prince Landon Gaines and Princess Leah Hall. Clicking on the link below will take you to an archive of the video of this event. The pageant doesn’t really get underway until about 17 minutes into the archive. Please accept our apologies for the quirky audio. There are several technical facets of this activity we are still learning. Thanks to all the Digital Connectors who helped with this production including Zach Foster, Dakota Vaughn, and Camron Dodd. Charlestown’s Education Partnerships Initiative mentioned in Lake County, IN News

State education chief Tony Bennett points to the southern Indiana city of Charlestown as a community where the school district and city have worked together successfully to overcome budget cuts and put young people to work.

“There are some very intriguing partnerships developing across the state, which show a new way to build relationships to help schools,” he said.

Tiny Charlestown, which had a population of 5,993 people according to the 2000 census, built a relationship with its schools.

Charlestown Mayor Bob Hall said the city and the district developed a program that gave middle and high school students laptops. Other programs developed around it, enabling students to teach adult learners about technology and social networking.

“The school budget cuts were a catalyst to get some of these things done now, but it also helped closed the gap between those who do and don’t know about technology,” Hall said.
